Located just 14 miles east of historic Beaufort, South Carolina, Harbor Island is snuggled in between St. Helena and Hunting Islands. It’s one of the Carolina Sea Islands, a private gated 1400 acre barrier island, known for its pristine beaches and stunning waterfront views. Here is a place where the tea is sweet, the seafood is savory, friendly folks say “hello”, and the memories you’ll make will last for a lifetime.
Located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry just outside of Beaufort (pronounced BEW-fort), Harbor Island is the perfect place for a weekend getaway, a family vacation, or that special place to call home. A small barrier island blessed with incredible natural beauty, Harbor Island offers a small-neighborhood feel, with views of the vast Atlantic Ocean from almost every place on the island.
As the gateway to the Beaufort Barrier Islands Important Bird Area, during the course of a year you may find over 200 species of birds. Five freshwater lagoons provide nesting areas for thousands of wading birds and our sandbars host nests for several threatened species. In spring and fall our island is a staging area for thousands of birds gathering for their migratory flights. From April to June thousands of Horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay their eggs at high tide under a full moon. These eggs provide much needed food for birds during spring migration.
From May to September, our beach is an active nesting site for endangered Loggerhead turtles. Our SC-DNR permitted turtle experts are among some of the most knowledgeable and dedicated individuals you will find in any environment hosting this endangered species as a nesting ground. Our ‘Harbor Island Turtle Patrol’ teammates (often with the help of volunteers), monitor the beach at all times and actively walk the entire shore twice daily to ensure all activity is assessed, logged, and actively monitored in the hopes of the successful return of hatchlings as they return to the sea. All we ask is that you observe the laws and make sure to leave the beach as you found it.
While Harbor Island is a prime spot for nature lovers, our 2-½ miles of pristine beach, Beach and Racquet Club (BRC) equipped with swimming pools, fitness center, playground, and tennis/basketball/pickle ball/volleyball courts offer various opportunities to engage in traditional activities/sports. Fishing from the seawall or the beach, crabbing in our tidal creeks or crabbing dock, bike rides around the island, or just setting a chair and an umbrella in the sand and enjoying the ocean breeze are among the favorite activities for owners and visitors, alike.
We invite you to join us for a weekend or a lifetime and soak up all that Harbor Island has to offer! (Credit: https://www.harborislandoa.com/)
